There Goes My Hero
I know most of you hate the New England Patriots for some odd reason. That's a real team, with real heart, and still manage to play while suffering a plague of injuries. There was one man who's injury stood out from the rest. That's right; I'm talking about none other than Tedy Bruschi.
Tedy Bruschi suffered a mild stroke shortly after winning his 3rd Super Bowl ring back in Feburary. How shortly you asked? Try 3 days after winning that Super Bowl! Bruschi was planning to sit out this entire 2005 season, but the Patriots still decided to place him on the physically-unable-to-perform list, instead of the injured reserved. The difference between these lists is that the physically-unable-to-perform list gives the Partiot organization the option to activate Bruschi, while the injured reserved means that they can not activate Bruschi for the entire season.
Bruschi has been craving to return to football for quite some time. But before he would jump the gun, he would obviously need clearance from his doctors. His main doctor says that there is nothing wrong with him and cleared him to play. Still concerned for himself and his family, Bruschi asked for a second opinion, and a third, and a fourth, and so on. He just wanted a doctor to say, "Sorry Tedy. You cannot yet, or ever, return to football." That wasn't the case, however, as every physician cleared Tedy Bruschi to play. The Patriots activated Bruschi from the physically-unable-to-perform list and he soon returned to practice on October 19th. He would make his season debut against the Buffalo Bills.
Tonight, on October 30, 2005, Tedy Bruschi returned to football, after suffering a mild stroke 8 1/2 months ago. The results? Tedy Bruschi had 2 tackles, and 5 assists. He playted 65 of 77 defense plays for New England and pitched in on special teams! 2 tackles may not seem a lot and the 5 assists was tied 2nd most on the team tonight, but its plainly obvious Tedy Bruschi's presense alone helped a banged up defense pull off a 21-16 victory over their division compadres, the Buffalo Bills. That just goes to show you that you can overcome any obstacle, wheather its a mild concussion, or a mild stroke.
